Until 1997 Cooper was focused mainly on its domestic market and it had an enviable record of growth and profitability. It then decided to diversify both geographically and in terms of product range by taking over Avon in Europe and Standard Products in the USA. Since then it has established a manufacturing base in China. The subsequent changes in the US market showed the correctness of some of these decisions although the diversification has since been reversed and the company is now concentrating on regaining its financial strength.
