Tire / Tyre Industry in China & Taiwan
By many measures China is the most important market for tires in the world. It is huge in terms of population and it has grown its economy very rapidly in the last three decades to the extent that it is now challenging the United States in terms of Purchasing Power Parity (PPP). It has grown at a rate of between 8% and 10% pa in the last three years whereas growth in the USA has more typically been between 2% and 3% per annum. Nevertheless, China has a long way to go before reaching US standards. The GDP per head is less than one fifth that of the USA.
Every international tire manufacturer has established manufacturing facilities in China, many of them more than one. In addition there are numerous indigenous tire manufacturers, a survival from the time when every local government was concerned with self-sufficiency. As a result, despite the large domestic market and the buoyant export trade, there is enormous overcapacity. There will be major changes in the industry structure but because of the convoluted ownership structures the process may take a long time.
China is still evolving into the early stages of a market-driven economy and the business climate is not straightforward but the international companies will be loathe to quit such a large market. However, if labour costs keep on rising as they are doing at present, manufacturing for export will become less and less profitable and they may seek other localities to manufacture. At the same time, because of the overcapacity, margins in the domestic market will be squeezed. China will remain a very important market for both the manufacture and sale of tires but it is likely to change rapidly in the next few years.
Three reports are available for this region. Two can be downloaded immediately. They examine the structure of the tire manufacturing industry in China and Taiwan and survey every tire factory in the region on a comparable basis. One is devoted to indigenous companies, the other to international companies. Both reports follow the same structure.
