Tire / Tyre Industry in Europe

The European tire market is one of the largest in the world but it is still remarkably diverse. The big difference is between the old eastern and western halves of the continent but some of the eastern states are catching up rapidly with their western counterparts. Others, such as Romania and Bulgaria, still lag far behind despite being members of the EU. Even within western Europe there are marked differences between northern and southern countries and these differences have been exacerbated by the problems in the eurozone since 2008.

European Tire RegionsDespite the political and economic differences between the 28 member states of the European Union (plus a number of other smaller states) the tire manufacturers are developing pan-European organisations superimposed upon national structures. Three of the largest global tire manufacturers, Michelin, Continental and Pirelli, are based in Europe and all other large tire companies have organisations across the continent. There are also several smaller but important tire manufacturers based in Europe but with global ambitions.

Like all sophisticated markets Europe has seen an influx of tire imports from Asia, particularly China and India but also Indonesia in recent years. The major manufacturers have their wholly-owned or franchised chains of retail outlets but there are many tire wholesalers and retailers willing to take on new brands for the right incentives. A more recent development is the presence of a number of large, well-funded, tire principals. These companies do not manufacture tires but are brand owners and have tires made to their specification which they then distribute.

Two reports are available for this region. The one that can be downloaded immediately examines the structure of the tire manufacturing industry in Europe and surveys every tire factory in the region on a comparable basis.

An Apology

Half the world uses the word "tire" whilst the other half uses "tyre". Unfortunately search engines don't realise that they mean the same. In order to be recognised by the search machines we have had to resort to the irritating strategy of duplicating the two words. Sorry!
